A play of life and death, promised
in a moment of mortal threat - so began the history of the Oberammergau Passion
Play in 1633. It is considered one of the most important religious and
cultural events in Germany.
Over 2000 participants present the story of Jesus of Nazareth to the
ears and eyes of the audience in a five-hour performance on the imposing
open-air stage. The theater seats 4,500 and is the world's largest open-air
stage with covered auditorium. Since 1634, the Oberammergauers have been
playing with great devotion the story of Jesus whose message over 2000 years
gives many people hope and strength. The play covers the period of Jesus
entering Jerusalem and continues up to his death on the Cross and his
